NuMex Sandia was released in 1956 and is a cross between No. 9 (developed by Fabian Garcia) and Anaheim varieties of chile. The cross, made by Roy Harper, under the name “Experimental 46-14” was later grown commercially as Sandia A. In 1967 the New Mexico Crop Improvement Association met and decided to change the name to Sandia. Sandia is an earlier maturing chile than other chilies. Pods are long, smooth and have a medium width wall. It is considered a hot chile and is one of the hotter long green New Mexico type peppers.

New Mexico State University & Biad Chili Products have produced Biad's Reserve with the New Heritage Varieties. A portion of all online sales are donated to help support NMSU’s chile research program.
